In the heart of the lands of the Mayan Civilization, Guatemala offers a rare diversity in such a small territory: Indian-indigenous villages and traditional markets in the Highlands, a dense volcanic chain of more than 34 volcanoes, 4 of them being active, cloudforests, tropical regions and Maya archaeological sites. With a largely Indian population from Mayan culture, this diversity is also reflected in the ethnic distribution: in addition to Spanish, 21 Mayan origin languages of are still spoken, as well as “Garifuna” on the Caribbean Coast.
